‘Sea monster’ fossil reveals oldest live reptile birth

{[['']]}
In a curious find, researchers bore witness to what may very well be the oldest live reptilian birth, preserved in the fossil of an Icthyosaur – a now-extinct giant marine reptile that evolved from land reptiles and migrated into the water.  The fossil specimen belongs to Chaosaurus, which at some 248 million years old is the oldest of the Mesozoic marine reptiles.

The finding appears February 12 in the journal PLOS ONE in an article titled “Terrestrial Origin of Viviparity in Mesozoic Marine Reptiles Indicated by Early Triassic Embryonic Fossils,” authored by Ryosuke Motani, from the University of California, Davis, and colleagues.
